Alameda Point tidelands revenue under scrutiny

Has the City of Alameda been spending lease revenue it receives from property it owns in the tidelands area of Alameda Point for purposes not authorized by state law?

That’s a question local and state authorities now are looking into.

With all the talk over the past year about economic development and the right mix of leasing and selling property at Alameda Point, City staff and the State Lands Commission, which owns and oversees tideland properties, now find themselves reviewing the books for revenues received from tideland properties, also known as Public Trust Land, at Alameda Point.

Updated De-Pave Park plan given green light by City of Alameda

In March 2024, after a decade of lobbying by advocates for wildlife and open space, the city council approved a Master Plan for building the ecological wetland park, known as De-Pave Park, at Alameda Point.

New shoreline landscaping is benefiting wildlife

The landscaping next to the Encinal Boat Ramp restrooms has added eye appeal for humans, while providing sources of food and shelter for wildlife. Bugs, bees, and birds come and go through the seasons, taking advantage of the mulch-covered ground and different shrubs and flowers. This area and the adjacent dune and beach were enhanced by the East Bay Regional Park District in 2020.

Taking a closer look at the activity in this micro habitat reveals life that may not be readily apparent or appreciated.

Volunteers clean up trash on shoreline of future De-Pave Park

It was an unsightly mess that motivated concerned residents to spring into action.

About 20 volunteers showed up on Sunday morning, October 17, to pick up the blanket of litter along the western shoreline of the Seaplane Lagoon at Alameda Point. This area is a popular destination for recreational visitors, many of whom leave their trash on the ground. The city recently took steps to stop side-show activity there.

Planning for Enterprise Park Begins

The Alameda Recreation and Parks Department has recently launched a survey on what the community would like to see at the triangle park on the southeast shoreline of Alameda Point. It is the first step in the process of creating a Master Plan. The barely publicized survey is being conducted by students at UC Berkeley and will end on December 3.
